The Idaho Vandals were the Bronco's biggest rivalry for many years. This Rivalry started in 1971 after the University of Idaho was forced to play Boise State in Football, because Boise State had joined the Big Sky Conference in 1970. The Broncos shocked the heavily favored Vandals in their first meeting in 1971, 42 to 14 and the rivalry was on. The first 25 games were played in the Big Sky Conference and the next 5 games were played in the Big West Conference. Idaho was a Member of the Sun Belt Conference from 2001 to 2004 and Boise State was a member of the WAC from 2001 till 2010. Idaho was a WAC member from 2006 to 2012. Idaho currently plays Football in the Sun Belt Conference and their other sports are in the Big Sky Conference.
The Vandals dominated the series for 12 years from 1982 to 1993 winning all 12 games. The Broncos ended the series by winning the last 12 games in a row.. The Broncos lead the series 22-17-1. The Broncos have outscored the Vandals by 338 points in the series.
Did someone say 'Tradition'?
by Micah Cranney
Tradition in the Vandal sense of the word? I hear people talk about the
"Vandal tradition" as if it's a good thing. Shall we have a look at
the Vandal tradition?
Started play in
1893
. Didn't win their first game until 1900. It took 8 seasons to win their first
game--although it appears that they didn't have a team for 2 of those years.
1900
to
1905
, had 4 winning seasons, including a 5-0 season in 1905.
1906
to
1910
, had 2 winning seasons, a .500 season, and 2 losing seasons.
1911
to
1920
, had 2 winning seasons (coincidentally were both 1911 and 1920--9 years
apart), though they didn't sport a team in 1918 due to WW1. Had 2 .500
seasons, and 4 losing seasons. In 1914, averaged 2 points/game, and 2.7
pts/game in 1915.
1920
to
1927
, had 5 winning seasons (though never higher than .667) and 3 losing seasons.
1928
to
1936
, only had 1 season of .500. All other years were losing seasons.
1937
and
1938
managed to have 2 consecutive winning seasons (.562 and .650).
1939
to
1962
, never managed to get over .500, and hit that only 3 times ('47, '52, and
'57). 1943 and 1944 were on WWII hiatus. 1940 averaged 3.3 pts/game. The
average margin of defeat in 1962 was 31.8 pts/game--even with 2 wins.
1963
to
1968
had 2 winning seasons, 2 .500 seasons and 2 losing seasons.
1969
to
1975
, had 1 winning season, and 6 losing seasons, including the first-ever game
with and first-ever loss to that soon-to-be former junior college in Boise in
1971
, which strangely enough was the only winning season they had during this
streak.
1976
to
1981
had 2 winning seasons (never higher than .636) and 4 losing seasons.
1982
to
1996
were all winning seasons (15 straight).
1997
to 2010 have had 3 winning seasons, 11 losing seasons.
All in all:
60 losing seasons
10 .500 seasons
38 winning seasons
.447
winning percentage
The tradition of the Vandal program is mediocrity (at best) or perhaps losing.
That's their tradition. It appears that the only anomaly in the whole scheme
of the tradition is the period in the 80's to 90's. This is the only time
period that doesn't seem to match the rest of the history of the football
program.
Now compare their tradition to the tradition that Boise State built from the
end of WWII 'til now (
.723
winning percentage)
Since 1968
:
5 losing seasons
1 .500 season
35 winning seasons
Prior to 1968
:
6 losing seasons
1 .500 season
24 winning seasons
All of the losing seasons were from 1932 to 1946. From 1947 through 1975,
Boise State had a consecutive winning season streak. Boise State went from
1946 until 1986 before it experienced its next losing season (1976 was a .500
season). No games were played from 1942-1945.
Combined since 1932
:
11 losing seasons
2 .500 seasons
59 winning seasons
